The reunion idea was born in Oklahoma City during one of many family holiday gatherings, and  between football games, as two families, Samuel D. and Franceil Lang and Thomas and Lorine Ruffin (all Boyd graduate) reminisced about their school.  Each recalled his/her school days at Boyd High and the people who touched their lives and/or left a lasting impression.  Principal O.E. Kennedy was utmost in everyone’s thoughts.

During that discussion, an idea arose about a possible all school reunion.  Principal Kennedy had often spoken of one day seeing all “his children” coming together in Frederick.  A plan was formulated to contact and seek the opinions of others from Frederick; and, solicit their support in an effort to hold a school reunion.

First, a list was made of all known alumni and former students living in the Oklahoma City area.  Each individual became a “committee of one”; and, a meeting was called within a month.  Thus, the first Oklahoma City Chapter of the Boyd Alumni and Former Students Association began by electing officers, forming committees and establishing by-laws.  It was agreed that the alumni and former students in Frederick should be contacted to elicit their participation and agreement eto begin the reunion project.  The reunion project lead to the formulation of other chapters in cities where a number of Boyd Alumni and Former Students lived.

Unfortunately, Mr. Kennedy did not live to see his dream come to fruition.  He died on March 6, 1970, as plans were being made for the first all school reunion.  The first reunion was held on May 29, 1971, in the Boyd High School Gymnasium in Frederick.

Boyd High School operated for many years; and, closed its doors in 1966.  During that time, many women and men passed through its corridors.  They have gone into all walks of life.  No matter what ones profession may be today, a bit of Mr. Kennedy’s philosophy is always present, lending its power to guide lives.  The reunions are and have been a time when old friends, classmates and families come together to renew friendships and share the things they have in common; and, look to the future for bigger and better ways of telling Boyd’s story.

Since the writing of this historical account, the organization has grown to include not only chapters in Oklahoma City and Frederick, but Southern California and the Dallas/Fort Worth areas.   There are also plans to reactivate other chapters.  The by-laws have been rewritten; and, many other committees have been added.  The association has also grown to include “The Next Generation”, which includes the children of Boyd High School Alumni and Former Students.  Through subsequent generations, we intend to keep Mr. Kennedy’s dream alive.
